Tuesday, August 4th, 1914. Barochan.

The morning papers report an extremely fine speech by Sir Edward Grey, & an unexpectedly loyal response from Redmond. A by–product of the international crisis is to be the final triumph of Irish "Home Rule"!

I went in to Glasgow with mine host, & was shown over the works of the Caledonian Railway. From the Company I as enabled to get gold for my bank–notes. This was no mean advantage, for the shortage of gold is already causing much inconvenience.
