S. Peter's Day, Monday, June 29th, 1914.

I went to the early service, & received the Holy Communion. When I came back to the house, I was met by the news that the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, Heir–Apparent to the Austro–Hungarian throne, had been assassinated in Bosnia together with his wife.

We dined at the Castle with Gee, & met the Judge – Sankey – together with many neighbours.
