In the afternoon I went to Newcastle, & there dined at the Mansion House with the Lord Mayor. We all went to a meeting in the interest of the National Service League. The Lord Mayor presided. Lord Lovat moved, & I seconded the principal resolution. There was a large & mainly sympathetic audience. My speech took half an hour to deliver, & was well received.

Ella was in the gallery with Mr Erskine's daughter. We returned to Durham after the meeting.
