Monday, March 23rd, 1914.
I wrote to Dr Söderblom giving a rather vague welcome to the invitation to lecture: & postponing my formal & final decision until I could see him.
In the afternoon I went to Newcastle, & there dined at the Mansion House with the Lord Mayor. We all went to a meeting in the interest of the National Service League. The Lord Mayor presided. Lord Lovat moved, & I seconded the principal resolution. There was a large & mainly sympathetic audience. My speech took half an hour to deliver, & was well received.
Ella was in the gallery with Mr Erskine's daughter. We returned to Durham after the meeting.
The newspapers had a very terrifying appearance this morning. It really seemed that civil war was imminent: but powerful peace–making forces are at work, & Asquith seems personally inclined to moderation.
