We motored to Newcastle, and there we first lunched with Hadow, & then attended the Prize distribution of a Girl's High School in Armstrong College. Northcote presided: I distributed the prizes, & made a speech: Hadow moved a vote of thanks flatterously. We stopped in the town to purchase a leather–lined coat, motor–man's hat, & gloves for Cummings. These cost me £6.10.0. Then we motored back to Durham.
After dinner I went to the Lecture hall in Palace Green, & presided at a meeting of students, at which Bishop Willis described the situation in Uganda. He impressed me favourably, and kept clear of cant.
