I spent an hour & a half in the national Gallery. The gross picture of Bishop Hoadley by Hogarth – a gross subject & a gross painter – arrested my notice, & the fine Vandyke's lent by Lord Lucas.
We lunched with Lord Channing. Miss Mundella was loud in her denunciations of my successor at S. Margaret's!
We had tea with the Chelmsfords. Lord C. and I had a long conversation about the ecclesiastical situation in Australia & the political situation in England.
We dined with Pearce & his sister.
