Monday, April 21st, 1913.

I felt miserably unwell when I got up: & was good for nothing all day. Ella insisted on fetching Dr Stewart, who could find nothing amiss with me.

Hadow, the Principal of Armstrong College, Newcastle, called here. We had some conversation about the degrees at Oxford. He seems to think that the statute will be defeated.

After dinner Mr Barren, the Sec: of the Aged Miners' Home Association came to see me in order to expound the purpose methods of the same. I have undertaken to lay a foundation stone on May 17th, make a speech. He tells me that there has been great improvement in the housing provision in the county during the last 15 years: but there is much bad property in Durham City, mainly owned by one man.
