I attended the Memorial Service for Whitelaw Reid, the American Ambassador, in the Abbey. Both the Dean & I wore purple copes. His was all right, but mine being designed for Duckworth's substantial frame, was disastrously too large. However with the aid of safety pins, I managed to get through the function without any public collapse. There was a great assemblage of statesmen & public functionaries.
Mother & Marion arrived from Birchington.
