What need a conscience, calm & bright

Within itself, an outward test?

Who breaks his glass to take more light,

Makes way for storms into his rest.

Henry Vaughan.

I celebrated at 8 a.m. in S. Margaret's. There were 18 comts. St Margaret's looks more beautiful than ever.

The congregation at Mattins was disappointing both in numbers and in sex. The Petticoats were fearfully dominant. Probably the fine autumn norming sent all the able–bodied males into the country, walking & golfing.

The Chelmsfords came in after service to say goodbye. They sail for Sydney next Thursday.

In the afternoon I preached to a large congregation in the Abbey on 1. Peter ii. 35. Marsden, who has now left Chigwell (i.e. has resigned the living) came in to tea, & waited on for Evensong in St Margaret's.

There was a large congregation in St Margt's at 7 p.m. I repeated the sermon which I preached in Stoke Parish Church last Sunday evening. The Offertory: £7.19.10.
