Monday, August 28th, 1911. Hamburg (Lübeck).
We walked to Cook's Office at 39 Alsterdam, & changed a circular note. Then we went to Lübeck, & spent the day in that wonderfully interesting city. Mr & Mrs Rieck, friends of Ella, met us at the station, entertained us at lunch in the Rathskeller, & took us to their home at Schwartau for afternoon tea. We saw the superb S. Mary's Church, the Cathedral, the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist, the curious Schiffer–gesellschaft, & the Burg–Tor.
We went by steam–boat from Lübeck to Schwartau, & enjoyed the view of the city from the river. Schwartau itself is a rising suburb, pleasantly situated, & surrounded with woods.
We returned to the Hotel by a train which left Lübeck at 7.29, and arrived in Hamburg about 8.30 p.m. After supper, I finished a letter to Ralph Inge, & wrote to old Mrs Drew, congratulating her on her 100th Birthday, which falls on the 31st of August.
