We motored to Thaxted where there is a magnificent church & a "Socialist" rector. On the road we were delayed by a puncture. While it was mending, I photographed by the road–side a group of rustics – women & children. We strolled to a fine but much dilapidated Elizabethan Mansion, hard by a parish church of attractive appearance.

The aspect of Thaxted Church towering above the picturesque village is imposing. At the end of the main street is a fine XVth century Guild hall. The Church itself is entirely worthy of its noble position. Nothing could well be more beautiful & surprising. The noble porches, the richly carved clerestory, the slender columns, the rich fragments of stained glass, the carved stalls, the elaborate font with its cover, and the grotesque gargoyles are all noteworthy.
