5th Sunday after Easter, May 21st, 1911.

~~Though the first appearance of it (Religion) upon the souls of good men may be but as the wings of the morning spreading themselves upon the mountains, yet it is still rising higher and higher upon them, chasing away all the filthy mists & vapours of Sin & Wickedness before it, till it arrives at its meridian altitude. There is the strength & force of the Divinity in it: & though when it first enters into the minds of men, it may seem to be sown in weakness, yet it will raise itself in power.~~

John Smith l.c. p.198.

A dull chilly morning with a high barometer. I celebrated at 8 a.m. when there were 35 comts.

There was a large but heterogeneous congregation at Mattins, when I preached for the Bishop of London's Fund. George Adam Smith was in Church. The Offertory was over £48.

At 3 there was a Church Parade of Territorials. I preached for about 20 minutes, & we sang "God save the King" fervently. Ernest Bennett was very magnificent in his uniform. Westlake preached at Evensong. There was a fair congregation.
