~~The Spirit of true Religion steering & directing the mind & life to God, makes it an uniform, stable & quiet thing, as God Himself is: it is only true goodness in the soul of man guiding it steadily & uniformly towards God, directing it & all its actions to the one last End & chief Good, that can give it a true consistency & composedness within itself.~~
John Smith l.c. 192
A wet morning. I celebrated in St Margt's at 8 a.m. There were 20 comts. At Mattins the congregation was visibly affected by the rain. I preached on the Equality of the Sexes, taking from the Lesson a text St John iv. 27.
Sir John & Lady Barran, Dr & Miss Bovey, Marsden, & 3 boys made up our luncheon party.
The weather cleared before Evensong. The church was full. I preached on "The Kingdom of God". With the Churchwardens sat Lord Blythswood, who once assailed me violently as a heretick in Glasgow!
Miss Baddely, Miss Elsie Graham, Mary, & the young men were at supper.
