~~I am knit round
As with a charm by sin and lust and pride,
Yet though my wandering dreams have seen all shapes
O strange delight, oft have I stood by thee –
Have I been keeping lonely watch with thee
In the damp night by weeping Olivet,
Or leaning on thy bosom, proudly less,
Or dying with thee on the lonely cross,
Or witnessing thine outburst from the tomb.
A mortal, sin's familiar friend, doth here
Avow that he will give all earth's reward,
But to believe & humbly teach the faith,
In suffering & poverty & shame,
Only believing he is not unloved.~~
Browning (from Pauline)
A bright but chilling morning. I celebrated in St Margts at 8 a.m. There were 20 cts.
Carlile preached in St Margaret's. I preached in St Peter's, Vere Street. In the congregation I saw Turnbull & his wife. Carlile, the Sub–Dean, & Westlake came to lunch.
