4th Sunday in Advent, December 18th, 1910.

I celebrated in St Margaret's at 8 a.m. when there were 15 communicants.

The preacher in the Abbey at the morning service was the Revd W. J. Sparrow Simpson. He preached well & vigorously against German critical views of Christianity, but he was too indiscriminating in his statements, and caricatured his opponents. Like many small men he has a loud voice, & a clear intonation.

After service we walked Logic around the Park.

The congregation in the afternoon was not large; partly this may have been due to a secession of the musical folks to the Temple where the renovated organ was being 're–opened.' Raleigh was present, and rather to my surprize I observed the Duchess of Buccleugh in Mrs Gow's seat. I preached on 'Lukewarmness', finding a text in the second lesson, which contained the Message to Laodicea.
