23rd Sunday after Trinity, November 14th, 1909.
A cold dark morning menacing rain. Marion's Birthday – may that good soul be blessed of God! I celebrated at 8 a.m. There were but 16 comts all told.
By service time a gloomy mist pierced by heavy rain covered everything. A very slender congregation gathered in St Margts. I preached on Philippians III.20 "Our citizenship is in heaven", ending my sermon with an appeal for the 'East London Church Fund'. The collection was but little more than £20!
The weather cleared somewhat at Evensong, when a larger congregation came together in church. I preached again on the same text. The offertory was rather under £10.
