15th Sunday after Trinity, September 19th, 1909.
My Johnsonian depression still weighs on me this morning.
Alington preached nicely on the text which I dealt with myself last Sunday afternoon. We did not clash or plagiarise! There were 133 comts.
In the afternoon I preached from 2.Cor.XII.9: binding my discourse into a discussion on Dr Johnson. Sir Henry & Lady Craik were in the congregation: also Mr Arbuthnot, Burkitt's uncle, who afterwards came in to tea. So did Master Wilfrid Stuart Hill, the small boy whom I found wandering in the Abbey a week ago, with the Deanery Guide in his hand. I note his address. 5B Crealock Street, Allfarthing Lane, Wandsworth.
Duckworth relieved me from the Abbey service so I attended Evensong in S. Margaret's, & read the lessons.
Anthony Brown came to supper, & Bob Bineham, Reggie Still, Gilbert, & Mary Scott.

On Monday, the 20th Sept. I conducted a Memorial Service in St Margaret's for Lord Tweedmouth. The Prime Minister & most of the Cabinet attended. The police took special measures to protect Asquith.
On Tuesday, the 21st Sept. I preached in St Matthew's Brixton. Before service I dined with the Churchwarden, who afterwards carried me back to Dean's Yard in his motor. A local Congregational Minister read the Lesson.
On Saturday afternoon I shewed a party of men from the Oxford House round the Abbey.
