5th Sunday after Trinity, July 11th, 1909.

Winnipeg: I preached in Holy Trinity Church at 11 a.m. There was a mixed choir, a hearty service, a large and attentive congregation. I repeated the sermon which I preached at Washington on May 30th.

Mr Johnson, the clergyman who monotoned prayers, came to lunch. He is a Scot; converted to Episcopolanism, & after serving divers cures in Scotland, coming here to settle. He gives a poor account of the English Church here:the poor quality of the clergy is the weakest point.

In the afternoon Mr Owen the clergyman from Vancouver called to see me. He seems an earnest and sincere man. He confirms Johnson's testimony as to the depressed state of Canadian Anglicism, & the cause of it. He says that in British Columbia the main theme of Anglican preaching is 'the historic Episcopate'! One need not wonder at spiritual failure if that be the case.

The weather became sultry towards evening, & finally settled down to a heavy & continuous rain.
