13th Sunday after Trinity, September 13th, 1908.

I attended the Episcopal Church in Selkirk. The minister, Mr Perry, preached on the Gospel for the Day, an extemporaneous discourse, in the course of which he denounced the declaration against the Mass legally required from the British Sovereign, and referred to the unemployed in Glasgow. I have a strong dislike of such 'topical' allusions.

In the afternoon my wife & I walked to Bowhill, and looked at the modest but comfortable mansion of the Duke of Buccleugh.

We stayed at Broadmeadows until Wednesday, the 16th Sept., when we moved on to Barochan, stopping in Edinburgh on the way to lunch with the Parker–Smiths. At Barochan we remained until the 19th, Saturday, being mainly in–doors by reason of the rain, then we returned to Auchenlea.
