4th Sunday after Trinity, July 12th, 1908.

A still close morning. I celebrated in S. Margaret's at 8 a.m. being alone. There were 19 comts.

Hine–Haycock celebrated at 9 a.m. for the Church Lads Brigade. There were 16 comts.

The Bishop of North Dakota preached at Mattins, & I read the service. His subject was 'Providence', which he deduced from the Theistic assumption. His sermon was very eloquent, and well–delivered, but his thesis was, perhaps, open to the charge of proving too much. In the congregation I noticed the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

There was a fair congregation at 7 p.m. in which I noticed several bishops and many clergy. I preached on 'Christ the Consoler'. The Offertory was about £6.14.0.

The old Primate of Ireland (Dr Alexander) married Mr Borrer on Thursday, the 16th July 1908, in St Margaret's. He was so frail & helpless that he had to sit while fulfilling his function. In the vestry afterwards I had some conversation with him. He told me that Bishop Lightfoot once said to him concerning Usher that his accuracy in judging MSS. partook of the nature of divination.
