We dined with Sir Henry Fowler. Among the company were Mr John Morley, & the Attorney–General. I had some most interesting conversation with both. Morley spoke with much frankness of India, and on Socialism. He thought the Socialist victory in the Colne valley would tell badly for the government in the country.

After the ladies had withdrawn, the talk turned on the recent ecclesiastical appointments, and I took the opportunity of speaking plainly what I thought.
