Mr Mudie Smith called on me this afternoon, and had an interview with me, in which he discussed the "New Theology", announced with so much blowing of trumpets from the 'City Temple'. I was mainly anxious to impress on him the importance of letting the foolish movement fizzle out. He told me that Campbell had claimed me as a sympathizer. There can be nothing but mischief from this foolish, crude, ill–prepared, ill–directed attempt.

The result of this 'interview' appeared in the 'Daily Chronicle' of Saturday, the 26th.
