Tuesday, December 11th, 1906.

At a Chapter Meeting this morning the Dean nominated, and the Chapter appointed Mr Lethaby to be the Surveyor of the Abbey in succession to Mr Micklethwaite.

George Mackarness came to lunch, and afterwards walked with me on the Embankment.

Walter Wragge, Vicar of S. Anne's Lambeth, called on me, and said that he had resigned his living, in despair of being able to carry on the work after the sacerdotalist–socialist principles there prevailing. He was still a socialist, but could not believe the sacerdotalist doctrines.

Bertram Mercer had tea with me. He is getting on vigourously [sic] at King's College, and seems keen & happy. After dinner my wife & I attended a Reception of the new Mayor. There was conjuring &c., infinitely silly.
