Advent Sunday. December 2nd, 1906.

A cold grey day. Knox celebrated at 8 a.m. when there were 43 communicants. At Mattins there was but a small congregation. I preached on "Christ & the Temple–market", combining in my text S. Matt. XXI. 12, 13, and I. Cor. iii. 16, 17. I celebrated after Mattins, when there were 83 commts.

In the afternoon I walked with Harold to St Anne's S. Lambeth, and preached to a little congregation of about 25 of very respectably–dressed men. On my return to the Rectory I found the commissariat–department in confusion, the hot–water apparatus having gone wrong.

There was a fair congregation at Evensong, when I preached on "Idolatry". We sang the 'Dies Irae' on our knees after the Blessing.

Knox and his wife came in to supper.

Mr Andrew Bell, the Secretary of the Glasgow United Y.M.C.A., came to see me, & extracted a promise that I would attend the annual meeting in October 1907.

Twice within a space of two days, I have had the unpleasant task of refusing to marry divorced persons .

On Wednesday, Dec: 5th 1906, I dined as the Admiral's guest with the Past Overseers' Society, and proposed the toast (not very successfully) of the Society.

On Friday, Dec: 7th 1906, my wife and I dined with the Morrisons. I had some conversation with Sir Albert Spicer anent the Education Act. Massingham the Pro–Boer was also one of the guests.

On Saturday, Alan Henderson came from Oxford to stay for a few days.
