15th Sunday after Trinity, September 23rd, 1906.
This is – at least yesterday was – the 300th anniversary of Richard Busby's birth. The vicar of his Birth–place – Lutton in Lincolnshire – sent two guineas for the purchase of a wreath to lay on his tomb.
The Bishop of Southampton (Dr Macarthur, once Bishop of Bombay) preached a good & useful sermon on the Gospel for the day. The Sub–Dean celebrated in my stead. Newsom preached in S. Margaret's.
There was a very large congregation in the Abbey at 3 p.m. when I preached my 'Busby' sermon. My voice held out better than I had dared to hope, and I think everybody was able to hear.
The Sub–Dean most kindly undertook to attend in the Abbey at 7 p.m. in my stead; so that I was able to stay indoors & be quiet.
