Our party diminishes rapidly. Captain Maxwell left last night. Mr Campbell went this morning. The Hamiltons motored into Edinburgh. I wrote letters & read the papers. Then we walked through the graveyards of the Hanging Shaw on to the Hills, escorted by the three dogs and Cuddie, the donkey.

In the afternoon we drove to Sunderland Hall, and paid our respects to Mrs Plummer. Returning, we called on Mrs Ballard. The road runs along by the boundary of Philiphaugh, the site of the battle in which Montrose was finally defeated by Leslie. A monument in the grounds of Philiphaugh commemorates the battle.

Lazily declining a proposal to climb 'Black Andrew' the hill opposite, on the farther bank of Yarrow, I wrote a long letter to Podge, and then settled down to a silly American novel until dinner time.
