The Chapter–meeting was interrupted by the Memorial Service for Lady Curzon. The Bishop of Stepney, Beeching, and I officiated. The Dean, Sub–dean, & Archdeacon attending in their robes.

We resumed the meeting at 2 p.m: & had another interval for the service in the Abbey, after which we again proceeded until after six. The Archdeacon deserted his colleagues early in the day: &, encouraged by this defection, Pharaoh stiffened his neck, & hardened his heart. As usual most of the wrangling fell to me. We came away in some confusion: but, finally, the Sub–dean agreed to write privately to Dibdin, & ascertain (α) whether he would give us an opinion: & (β) what would be his fee.

I dined with the members of the City Corporation with Lord & Lady Cheylesmore at 16 Prince's Gardens.
