Trinity Sunday, June 10th, 1906.

A most glorious summer day, bringing vividly to mind the Sunday at Cuddesdon just 19 years ago, when I was ordained. The anniversary finds me in extreme perplexity. All my colleagues have suddenly announced their simultaneous departure. Kirshbaum goes to a living: Sherwood to a headmastership: Walters follows Kirshbaum. The last departure astonished me. I heard it from the Bishop of London who stated that he (Walters) was 'most anxious to accompany K'. But when I spoke on the matter with Walters himself, he denied this point blank. He had not seen the Bp. of L.: whose authority for his statement must have been K. I cannot advise any attempt to cross the Bp's evident wish: though it is horribly inconvenient.

I went to S. Margaret's at 8 a.m: and celebrated the Holy Commn. There were 31 cts. including my 3 colleagues & Ellison.

Feeling fatigued and voiceless, I did not go to church in the forenoon, there being no necessity for my doing do, as the Dean was in the Abbey, & a special preacher (Carlisle) in S. Margaret's. So I remained in my room, & wrote letters &c. Also I finished reading Madame Darmesteter's charming life of Ernest Renan.

In the afternoon I preached in the Abbey wearily & I fear ineffectively on the Gospel for Trinity Sunday. The Bishop of Massachusetts was in the stalls and Monty Bere.

There was a fair congregation at Evensong in S. Margaret's. I preached on Isaiah VI. 1.8.9. Ellison read the lessons, & the last part of the prayers. Afterwards he came into supper as did Anthony Brown & the two brothers Sherwood.

On Monday, June 11th, 1906 I dined with the Brotherhood at Gamble's house. 141 Sloan Street.

On Tuesday, June 12th, the erection of the new reredos was actually begun. Gerald Marshall fetched away the old reredos, which I had presented to his Church.

The Bishop of Massachusetts & Mrs Lawrence lunched here. Also Hine–Haycock & the Admiral.

I dined at the Deanery.

June 14th, Charles Sandbach Parker was married in S. Margaret's to Harriette Dorothy Mead–Waldo. Canon Baggallay tied the knot: Burge read the second part of the service. I gave an address.

June 16th Saturday

Lord Howick was married to Lady Mabel Georgina Palmer in S. Margaret's. The Bp. of Southwark officiated assisted by Lord W. Cecil & me. Arthur Balfour and Chamberlain signed the register. We went to the reception in Arlington Street.

I shewed a party from the Hospital at Ilford over the Abbey.
