Dr Samuel Butcher, the new Member for Cambridge University, lunched here in order to discuss the educational question. He is by no means inclined to follow High Church leading, and is personally eager for a settlement; but he is clearly embarrassed by the clerical character of his constituency, and very anxious not to separate himself from the main body of the Opposition. I gave him a copy of the Free Church Catechism, which he had not seen: & drew his attention to Dr Fitchett's articles in the Tribune.
