Sunday after Christmas, December 31st, 1905.
As I had to celebrate in the Abbey vice Decani I did not get up for the early service in S. Margaret's, missing thus the spectacle of a sunrise which was described to me as extraordinarily splendid. Waggett preached in the Abbey at Mattins, & I celebrated the Holy Communion. After the service I walked round to S. Margaret's and heard half of Newsom's sermon. In the afternoon I preached to a great congregation in the Abbey on "Manhood tranisitory [sic] and everlasting". After service, Rashdall & Headlam with their wives came to tea.
I preached again in S. Margaret's to a large congregation. After the carols we sang the 'Old Hundredth', Hymn 166, as an act of special thanksgiving.
Aylwin & Winifrid came in to supper: & Albert Saxton. While we were sitting round the fire in the drawing room, Blackmore came in to tell us that chickenpox had broken out in the Choir–School, & that, by consequence, the 'party' arranged for tomorrow could not take place.
