Thursday, January 26th, 1905.

At 1 a.m. [sic] Mr Kempe met me in Church with plans for the East End. We were joined by the Churchwardens, Sir Michael Hicks Beach, the Speaker, Erskine, & Taverner Miller.

Afterwards I showed the plans to Mr Talbot. The general opinion seemed to be in favour of extending the Chancel as far as the ground would allow.

Harold & I walked down the Embankment, and bought common-place books, & a machine for copying letters.

Finally, I dined with G. W. Prothero, & met Sidney Lee, Mrs Clifford, & other interesting people.

Mrs Prothero's brother Dr Butcher talked to me for some while. I took Mrs Creighton to dinner.

On Friday, the 27th Jany, I went to Oxford; travelling in the same compartment with Sir Michael Hicks Beach, with whom I had a brief conversation. He said that the Ritual Commission would probably not report until the end of the year, and that the Report would probably give great impetus to the Disestablishment movement.

On Saturday, the 28th Jany, I attended the meeting of the Oxford House Council, at which Sherwood's brother was appointed Secretary to the House.

After dinner I returned to Westminster, & found Harold sitting up for me.
