4th Sunday in Advent, December 18th, 1904.
Lake preached an excellent discourse at Mattins in the Abbey: & after that, I took him for a ‘constitutional' on the Embankment.
At Evensong in Abbey I preached wearily for 36 minutes on "Christian Experience, the Test of Apostolic Testimony". Miss M. Corelli's insulting description of an "Atheist Canon" in Westminster, applied generally to me and thought to be drawn from life, seemed to be in the atmosphere, & I was conscious of being the object of mis-trustful curiosity, rather than of respect. This sentiment was assisted by the ostentatious rudeness of the Minor Canon, who in full view of the congregation, read instead of listened! It is rather hard to be insulted within, as well as without the Abbey.
