24th Sunday after Trinity, November 13th, 1904.
A fog tending to grow denser. I celebrated at 8 a.m: there were 21 communicants. The Bishop of London preached in the Abbey for the East London Church Fund, & I expected no congregation in S. Margaret's. But there seemed no appreciable diminution: & among those present were Alf. Lyttelton & Sir Courtenay Ilbert.
At 4 p.m. I preached to the Church Lads Brigade in S. Margaret's. Harold accompanied me to S. Philip's Stepney - a remarkably fine church - where I preached to a congregation largely consisting of the nurses from the London Hospital.
Oxford & his daughter lunched here. He is in a strange state of mind, & talks about resigning his Orders. He says that he has not prayed, except officially, for 12 years. This is very sad, & sets one thinking.
