St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, was founded in 598 by the Benedictines and survived until the dissolution in 1538. A programme of reconstruction commenced in 1842 following the purchase of the ruins by James Alexander Hope, and a missionary college was established on the site; this was destroyed by enemy aircraft in 1941.
