Holyrood can mean the area of Edinburgh at the bottom of The Royal Mile, or the Royal Palace of Holyrood at the heart of this area. The Lord High Commissioner to the Church of Scotland, as the sovereign's representative, used the Palace for formal entertainments during the period of the general assembly's sessions.
