Philip Kerr (1882-1940; ODNB), New Coll., Oxford; political career forged in South Africa as a member of 'Milner's Kindergarten', 1906-10; close associate of Lionel Curtis, campaigner for unification in South Africa and imperial federation, editing Curtis's journal, The State, and its successor, The Round Table, 1910-16; private secretary to Lloyd George, 1916-21; prominent roles in Liberal party politics; 11th marquess of Lothian, 1930; chancellor, duchy of Lancaster in National Government, 1931, under-sec, India, 1931-2; British ambassador to Washington, 1939-40; Christian scientist who refused medication during the illness that led to his death.
