Oliver Stanley (1896-1950; ODNB), 2nd son of 17th earl of Derby; military service 1914-18; bar. 1919; MP(C) Westmorland 1924-45, Bristol West 1945-50; m. 1920, Maureen, eldest d. of 7th marquess of Londonderry; from 1922, lived at a Derby estate, Witherslack Hall, in north Lancashire; junior government posts, 1924-29, 1931-3; reputation as a progressive Conservative, supporting government economic interventions; various cabinet posts from 1933, including war secretary 1940 and colonial secretary 1942-5.
