Robert Vansittart (1881-1957;ODNB), diplomatic service, 1902-20, then foreign office 1920-41, including permanent under-secretary, 1930-38, and chief advisor to foreign secretary, 1938-41; notable critic of Hitler's regime, turned into public anti-Germanism; author, including Black record; Germans past and present (1941), decried as 'Vansittartism'.
