Benedetto Croce (1866-1952), Italian philosopher, influential in the development of Idealist thought and its dissemination beyond the academy; conception of the human subject as the centrepiece of history as a quest for moral freedom, though within the 'ethical universal' of the state; opponent of fascism from 1925 and the first fascist dictatorship in Italy; chiefly read now for his work on aesthetics.
