Thomas Legh, 2nd Baron Newton (1857-1942; ODNB), owner of Lyme Park; Christ Church, Oxford; diplomatic service, 1880-6; MP(C) Newton, 1886-98, when succeeded his father; advocate of house of lords reform, important in the passage of the Parliament Act, 1911; paymaster-general, 1915-16; assistant under-secretary, foreign office, 1916; controller, Prisoners of War Department, 1916-19; author of two political biographies; remained an active Conservative peer between the wars.
