John Wesley
John Wesley (1703-91; ODNB), ord. as a priest in the Church of England, 1728; embarked upon a national campaign for evangelisation following his return from missionary activity in Georgia in 1738, founding Methodism as central to religious revival in Britain; preached through open air meetings independently of, and often in opposition to, Church doctrine and worship; supported the anti-slavery campaign and the campaign for Methodist schools and Sunday schools. Henson preached frequently at Methodist and Wesleyan chapels but engaged critically with Wesley's views on the Church, as expressed in his published journal, sermons, and letters.
