Moses Haim Montefiore
Moses Montefiore (1784-1885; ODNB), financier and philanthropist; president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1835-79, with an international reputation; bt., 1846; prominent in the development of Jewish settlements in Palestine; his centenary widely celebrated in Britain. Henson lived close to Montefiore’s country estate, East Cliff Lodge, Ramsgate, when his family moved to the town in 1879. He referred to this connection in supporting a motion in the Church Assembly in 1935 expressing sympathy with the suffering of the Jewish people in Germany: Report of Proceedings: Church of England, National Assembly, 16:3 (Autumn session, 20 Nov. 1935), 476.
