Michael Ramsey (1904-88; ODNB), Magdalene Coll., Cambridge; ord. 1928; professor of divinity, Univ. of Durham, and canon, Durham Cathedral, 1940-50; Regius professor of divinity, Cambridge, 1950-2; bishop of Durham, 1952-6; archbishop of York, 1956-61, and of Canterbury, 1961-74; Anglo-catholic, influenced by the Barthianism of Edwin Hoskyns; his first book The gospel and the catholic church (1936) attempted to reconcile catholicism and evangelicalism.
