Wilhelm Levison (1876-1947; ODNB); professor of history, Univ. of Bonn, 1920, with an international reputation as an Anglo-Saxon specialist; Hon. D.Litt., Univ. of Durham 1931; as a Jew, forced from his professorship inn 1935, and fled from Nazi Germany in 1939 to become hon. fellow at Durham, where he lived until his death; Ford Lecturer, Univ. of Oxford, 1943.
