Joseph Herman Hertz

Joseph Hertz (1872-1946; ODNB), born in Slovakia, educated in the USA, including Columbia University; rabbi, Johannesburg, 1898-1911; chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Empire, 1913-46; cultivated good relations with successive archbishops of Canterbury, and became a prominent public figure, especially in protests against Russian and Nazi persecution of Jews; co-founder with William Temple of the Council of Christians and Jews, 1942; CH 1943.
