Stephen Harold Spender
Stephen Spender (1909-1995; ODNB), poet and writer, born into a literary family; attracted to communism during the Spanish Civil War along with W.H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood, whom he met at Oxford, but returned to his family's liberalism after two brief visits fo Spain; advanced nature of his liberal beliefs apparent in Forward from Liberalism (1937); contributor to The God that Failed (1950), in which leading writers expressed their disillusion with communism; co-editor of Encounter, 1953-63; resigned when the CIA source of the magazine's funding was revealed; kt 1983.
