Malcolm MacDonald (1901-1981; ODNB), second son of Ramsay MacDonald; Queen's Coll., Oxford; MP (Lab) Bassetlaw, 1929-31, and after joining his father in the National government in 1931, MP (Nat Lab) 1931-5, and Ross and Cromarty 1936-45; junior minister, dominions office, 1931-5; colonial secretary, 1935, 1938-40; dominions secretary, 1935-8; minister of health, 1940-1; high commissioner, Canada, 1941-5; governor general, Malaya 1946-48 and numerous proconsular positions in the commonwealth until retirement in 1967; OM 1969; chancellor, University of Durham, 1970-81.
