Alan [A.P.] Herbert (1890-1971; ODNB), New Coll., Oxford; writer, later staff member, Punch, 1910-71; war service 1914-17; prolific author and dramatist, some works for humorous purposes, others to promote numerous public causes, particularly legal and censorship reforms; MP (Ind) Oxford University, 1935-50; introduced what became the matrimonial causes act, 1937; like Henson, a leading critic of the Oxford Group movement, though chiefly on the grounds of its implied association with Oxford University; kt. 1945.
