Henry Adolphus Mess

Henry Mess (1884-1944; ODNB), social worker and social researcher inspired by the social message of Christianity; secretary to the Mansfield House settlement in the Docklands, 1912-1919, and then to the Christian student movement; lecturer in social science, Lancashire and Yorkshire Congregational Union, 1924-5; honorary doctorate in Economics, London School of Economics and director of the bureau for social research, Tyneside, 1925; director of the Tyneside council of social service, 1929-35; reader in sociology, Bedford Coll., London, 1935; supporter of voluntary social services alongside state agencies after the war, the subject of his book, Voluntary social services since 1918 (1947).
