Lionel Arnold Curtis
Lionel Curtis (1872-1955; ODNB), writer and colonial administrator; one of Lord Milner's proteges from Oxford in the kindergarten he established in South Africa during the Second Boer War; leading figure in the 'Round Table' movement, 1909-1931, which sought to promote federation among the British Empire's self-governing colonies; following the decline of the movement after the First World War, set out his 'idea of the Commonwealth' - a vision of the union of western democracies - in Civitas Dei (3 vols., 1934-7).
