The Henson Journals

Rachel Pearsall Conn [Ray] Strachey

Rachel [Ray] Strachey (1887-1940; ODNB), suffragist, campaigner for women's rights, and writer; brought up by her Quaker grandmother, Hannah Whitall Smith (d. 1911), the inspiration behind her book Religious Fanaticism (1928), re-issued in 1934 as Group movements of the past and experiments in guidance, to which Henson contributed an introduction; centred on Smith's account of the 'experiments and experiences' among religious sects through which she misguidedly sought Divine Guidance, and subsequent retreat into the quietism of the old Quakers; republication of the book prompted by Buchman's Group Movement and dangers of emotional religion. See Volume 60, 86.
